Hamish Jones’s sculptures explore the nature of play, memory and childhood. Ideas surrounding mass-production, consumption and the manufacturing of a productive capitalist society are prevalent in the highly finished and sometimes repetitive works. As well as the serious and complex conversations the works generate, there is a playful and light-hearted element to the pieces, drawing the viewer in to a vibrant and colourful adult-sized game.
Hamish Jones completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 2003. After spending time traveling and living in South East Asia, South America, Korea and Australia, Jones returned to his hometown of Dunedin and gained a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching in Art and Technology. He now lives and works in Dunedin where he practices art. Hamish Jones is represented by Gallery 33 in Wanaka.
