HAMISH JONES BIOGRAPHY
Hamish Jones completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 2003. After spending time traveling and living in South East Asia, South America, Korea and Australia, he returned to his hometown of Dunedin and gained a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching in Art and Technology. He now lives and works in Dunedin where he practices art.
Jones’s sculptures explore the nature of play, memory and childhood. Ideas surrounding mass-production, consumption and the manufacturing of a productive capitalist society are prevalent in the highly finished and sometimes repetitive works. As well as the serious and complex conversations the works generate, there is a playful and light-hearted element to the pieces, drawing the viewer in to a vibrant and colourful adult-sized game.
“Walking into a room filled with Jones’ art work, one is instantly taken back. Large toy-like objects fill spaces and the experience of reacting with a life-size toy is rather uplifting. The feelings of childhood start to tingle in the body- not just because compared to the objects, one appears small and child-size again but also because they are familiar figures that are instantly recognisable. The longing for days immersed in a seemly real imagined world is readily felt.” (1)
